What is a Postpartum Doula (PPD)?
A Postpartum Doula (PPD) is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to families after the birth of a baby. Their main goal is to help parents feel confident, supported, and nurtured during the transition into life with a newborn.
-
What's the difference between a Postpartum Doula and a Nanny?
A postpartum doula supports the entire family, focusing on the parents’ well-being, newborn care education, emotional support, and household adjustment. A nanny primarily provides childcare, often without the additional focus on parental support and education.
-
Do Postpartum Doulas provide medical care?
No, postpartum doulas are non-medical professionals. They do not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice. However, they can identify when something may need medical attention and refer families to appropriate healthcare providers. Postpartum Doulas have a range of resources and education that they can offer.
-
How long do families typically hire a PPD?
It varies. Some families hire doulas for a few days or weeks, while others may have support for several months, depending on their needs.
-
Are postpartum doulas only for first-time parents?
Not at all! Doulas support families with multiple children, including those with twins, preemies, or medically complex babies, as well as families navigating unique challenges like grief or postpartum mental health concerns.
-
Can a postpartum doula help with breastfeeding?
Yes, doulas provide basic breastfeeding support, help with latch and positioning, and offer guidance on common challenges. If specialized support is needed, they refer to lactation consultants.
-
Can I use multiple services at once?
Yes! If you are looking for organization as part of your visit it is an additional fee for either whole rooms, or smaller baby areas. I can offer both daytime and nighttime support depending on your needs. For grief and loss my services are the same and the price doesn’t change, but my knowledge and resources for parenting through grief are what make my services unique.
-
Do I need to sign a contract?
I have a contract available for signing, and I pride myself on my flexibility with families! I don’t want our relationship to feel transactional. I do not require down payments but expect a trust to be built between myself and my clients.
